SLP Renga
Unveiling
Friends of the Arts has created a
community wide poetry program called Our Town:
Voices and Verses. Part of this program was free
one-hour poetry workshops for community members of St.
Louis Park. Through these workshops, lines of
poetry describing St. Louis Park were created.
These lines were then combined into a Renga
(a community poem) by Community Poet, Diane
Pecoraro. This Renga has been modified into a
spoken word piece that will be performed at the Children
First Ice Cream Social on Sunday, May 16th from 2-5
pm at Wolfe Park Pavilion. It should be a
great day filled with lots of wonderful art; we
would love to see you there!
WHERE: Wolfe Park Pavilion
WHEN: Sunday, May 16th from 2-5
pm
WHAT: The SLP Renga (community
poem) spoken word performance piece
Please email info@slpfriendsofthearts.org or

Our Town: Verses & Voices is funded by
grants from the Metropolitan Regional Arts Council
through an appropriation from the Minnesota State Arts
Board, the St. Louis Pak Community Foundation and Park

Community Poet's Corner
by Diane Pecoraro
Portrait
Gallery, The Clark Museum More modern ways
of telling the face and body turned me away from the
absolutes of portraiture. Yet through countless
Sundays of my childhood, I stood in the galleries of
major museums scrutinizing the thin lips and somber
gazes of Prince "This" holding a
book or Lady "That" with her beloved lap
terrier, the lace collars, the velvet jackets, the
precise gray wig ,the occasional errant
curl. With patricians and burghers looking
at you, their perfectly rendered eyes meeting
yours, a dialogue was possible and so was an
introduction to lusty gypsies and tipsy
peasants. Such characters inspired
stories. On this Sunday in the galleries, I
am considering the portraits of American statesmen-
the patriots and politicians. George Washington
looks out from an ornate gilt frame. His gaze meets
mine and holds. In this exchange is a
truth: I have lived longer now and can read
more from a fragile feature or cynical stare,
comprehend the unbearable weight of a general's
decisions in times of war and
tariff. --Diane Pecoraro (10/23/05
